DIVE SITES IN THE SOUTH SWISS CHEESE (ADVANCED DIVE) This site is located on an extension at the Scott's Heat Point Self. Although not exactly in the Atlantic Ocean, the site is close to where the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet. The shelf averages between 30 and 80ft, with two pinnacles. Both pinnacles have swim-through, which are loaded with thick schools of blackbar, soldier fish, grunts, big eye, lobsters and occasional turtles. One of the pinnacles leads down to one of the most beautiful walls in Dominica, this wall is thick and bushy with gorgonians, black corals, barrel sponges, iridescent vase Sponges, crinoids, basket sponges, wire coral and rope sponges. Thick Schools of jacks, snappers, mackerel, occasional grouper, blue and rainbow runners. SUBURBS (ADVANCED DIVE) A fantastic formation covered in deep water sea fans and sponges. There is a shelf at about 80ft, with large sponges and hard coral together with other coral formations create an unforgettable site. Many sea creatures visit this site. This is a dive that depends on currents and waves. DANGLE BENS PINNACLES (ADVANCED DIVE) There is a series of about 5 pinnacles, which are sitting in a semi Circle, on a deep shelf. The shelf averages between 60 and 90ft, though some areas drop more than 200ft. The pinnacles average 40ft-30ft below the surface. This is one of the most colorful dives in Dominica. The corals at this site are in very good condition and the variety is the spice of this dive. Almost every coral can be seen at this site. One fascinating aspect of this dive is the thousands of small fish that can be seen. Because of this abundance, bigger fish such as jacks, barracuda, cero mackerel, snappers and the occasional stingrays and turtles are also regulars at this popular site. SCOTT'S HEAD PINNACLE (ADVANCED DIVE) This dive sometimes has strong currents. A spectacular view awaits, in this advanced dive. It is highlighted by the dramatic swim through cutting straight to the middle of the pinnacle. The other side drops away quite dramatically into volcanic caldera, which created a wall inhabited by sea sponges and fans. CORAL GARDENS (EASY DIVE/SNORKEL) An excellent dive, for all levels of certification. This is an enjoyable dive, though shallower than most. Finger and pencil coral conceal many lettuce sea slugs and moray eels. Sea horses and frog-fish can be seen here as well as turtles. CHAMPAGNE (EASY DIVE/SNORKEL) This is an easy dive for all levels. It is famous for its volcanic under water hot spring, which spews out bubbles and hot water. Many small creatures inhabit this site such as frog fish and sea horses. This is a night dive that you will never forget! RODNEY'S ROCK (EASY DIVE/SNORKEL) This dive site is located south of the Layou River. There are many large rocks just offshore covered with gorgonians and hydroids. Large schools of sergeants majors and blue and Grey chomis are often seen in this area. However, this site is known for its reef creatures, you will not be left disappointed. TOUCARI BAY (EASY DIVE/SNORKEL) This is a nice dive for either day or night. It boasts a great variety of beautiful sea inhabitants including lobster, squid, rays, eels, trumpet fish, parrot-fish, puffer-fish, octopus, crabs and many more. Also many swim throughs. SCOTT'S HEAD DROP OFF (EASY DIVE/SNORKEL) This dive suits all levels. The wall is 15 to over 80ft in depth. This is a very colorful and enjoyable dive with beautiful sponges of every kind available to the eye. There is an amazing diversity of creatures to be spotted here. This is a very relaxing dive. SCOTT'S HEAD BAY (EASY DIVE/SNORKEL) This site is located in the Scott's Head Bay on the shelf of Scott's Head Point, the Southern most tip of Dominica. It is not a vertical wall, but more of a drop off. The shelf is a gradual slope, from shore to about 30ft and then drops gradually to between 50 and 80ft, in some areas it keeps dropping to as deep as 200ft. It is an interesting drop with lots of cracks and crevices, small caves and caverns laced with grinoids, basket star, orange and lavender rope sponges, black coral and sea forms. Yellowtail snapper, cero mackerel, barracuda, string rays are common sights as well as our smaller friends the seahorse and frog- fish. Coral heads on the shelf come upto 10 to 20ft, perfect for safety stops at the dive. POINT GURNARD (EASY DIVE/SNORKEL) A strip of hardened volcanic lava forms a point from the shore. Extended out to sea, this point extends above the waters surface but drops down to above the water's surface. It then drops down to about 80ft on the western side where it forms an excellent drop of which has a lot of interesting cracks, crevices, overhangs, a small cave at about 40ft. A light is recommended on a day dive, in order to really see between the cracks and crevices. Some days this site can be a stable of sea horses, frog- fish, octopus, small snake eels, morays and the occasional stingrays and turtles. An excellent night dive! SOUFRIERE PINNACLES EASY DIVE/SNORKEL) Two pinnacles sitting on a shelf averaging 30 to 50ft deep. The shelf drops on a wall, which reaches down deeper than 800ft. The top of the pinnacles, comes up to 15ft and 5ft below the surface. Gorgonians, black coral, sea fans, grinoids, sea rods and a wide variety of sponges decorate both pinnacles and the wall. Although this site is famous for a smaller variety fish and other inhabitants such as squid, snake, eel, flamingo tongues and frog- fish. This is an easy and relaxing dive for all levels of certification. LA BIM WALL (EASY DIVE/SNORKEL) Located in the underwater volcanic crater in Soufriere, Scott's Head Marine Reserve. This wall plunges down to some 1000ft plus. Vertically, it begins some 20ft below the surface. The wall is decked with tons of the hardened soft corals among which thousands of small marine creatures lurk. Coral shrimps, pederson shrimps, scarlet ladies, mantis shrimp, nudibraucus, sea slugs, sea horses, frog- fish. Also larger fish such as jacks, snapper, barracuda, stingrays, turtles and the occasional nurse shark. CARIBS LEAP (EASY DIVE/SNORKEL) This dramatic wall is located on the North- Eastern side of an underwater volcanic crater about 10 yards off shore. Some parts of this wall drops down to more than a 1000ft. This site is loaded with black coral, gorgonians, grinoids, barrel sponges and a wide variety other soft and hard corals. Marine life, include bigger jacks, barracuda, yellowtail snappers, stingrays and turtles to smaller life such as seahorses, frog-fish, nudibranchs, flat worms flying gurnauds and octopus. Though this is an easy dive, proper buoyancy control and frequent monitoring of depth gauges is recommended. |
